Matthew frequently gets reprimanded for running up to Benjamin and yanking something out of his hands. (Why is it that children are not interested in something unless another child is playing with it? But that’s for another comic to explore…) We tell Matthew over and over again, “You can’t just grab things from someone else. You need to ask for it.” Inevitably, Matthew will then immediately ask, “Can I have [insert name of object here]?” Next comes a big tantrum from Matthew when Benjamin says, “no.” So we tell Matthew, “Well, why don’t you see if he wants to trade you for something else? Or, you can wait until he is done playing and then you can have a turn.”
I’m glad to say that Matthew has finally started to figure out that there is less conflict (or at least less lecturing from us) if he initiates a trade sooner than later.
